الوحدة: The heart: honesty, patience, gratitude
The word akhlaq, the example of the Prophet ﷺ, and why character weighs heavily on the scale.
In Arabic, good character is ḥusn al-khuluq, and the whole set of behaviours is called akhlaaq. It is the way you treat others, the way you speak, the way you react when things go well… and when they go badly.
The source. Allah says to the Prophet ﷺ: وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ "And you are truly of a tremendous character" (68:4).
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best of you are those with the best character." (Bukhari 3559, Muslim 2321) He also said that nothing is heavier on the believer's scale on the Day of Judgement than good character. (Abu Dawud 4799, Tirmidhi 2002)
Why does it matter? Because religion is not only prayer and fasting. Someone who prays but lies, insults or looks down on others has not understood the whole message. Good character is faith that shows.
Good news: character can be worked on. Nobody is born perfect. In this course we will look at seven qualities, one per lesson: honesty, patience, gratitude, kindness to parents, neighbours, gentleness, and speech.
What about you? Think of someone you admire for the way they behave. What do they do differently? Write down one quality you would like to have.
Understanding the lesson
Explanation The word khuluq (character) comes from the same root as khalq (creation). Scholars see an idea in this: character is your "inner shape", just as your body is your outer shape. At the start of the night prayer, the Prophet ﷺ used to say in a supplication: "Guide me to the best of character; none guides to it but You." (Muslim 771)
Part of character is natural, the rest is built. The Prophet ﷺ said to a man from the tribe of 'Abd al-Qays: "You have two qualities that Allah loves: self-control and calm deliberation." (Muslim 17) Some people have these qualities from the start, others have to build them: both paths are possible.
Good character is not only "being nice to people who are nice". It is staying fair and respectful even when you are tired, annoyed or provoked. It is also what you do when nobody is watching.
Common pitfalls: thinking character is just politeness; telling yourself "that's just how I am, I can't change"; being lovely with your friends and unpleasant at home.
Lessons to draw • Choose one small, concrete improvement, for example no longer interrupting people. • Notice when you lose patience (tiredness, hunger, screens) and plan your reaction in advance. • Surround yourself with friends who lift you up. • Ask Allah to help you change: the Prophet ﷺ did so himself (Muslim 771).
Key points • Akhlaaq = the whole set of behaviours; ḥusn al-khuluq = good character. • Nothing weighs more on the scale than good character (Abu Dawud 4799, Tirmidhi 2002). • Character can be worked on, little by little.
The main message Good character is your faith made visible: every effort to behave better counts with Allah.
