الوحدة: أَقْرَأُ
We review all the signs learned in "My Arabic alphabet" and in this course, and read a final set of words and phrases.
Well done! Look at everything you can read now 🎉
My box of signs: ـَ a ـِ i ـُ u ("My Arabic alphabet") ـْ the letter rests (sukun) ـَا aa ـِي ii ـُو uu (long vowels) ـً an ـٍ in ـٌ un (tanwin) ـّ the letter counts twice (shadda) ال "al": moon letter (we say "l") or sun letter (the "l" is silent) ة "a" when stopping, "t" when carrying on ء أ إ ؤ ئ hamza, a little stop; آ hamza + "aa"
Read these words, with the "look, cut, read" method: نَحْلَة naḥla, the bee 🐝 الشَّمْسُ ash-shamsu, the sun ☀️ الْقَمَرُ al-qamaru, the moon 🌙 طَائِرَةٌ ṭaa'iratun, a plane ✈️ سَمَاءٌ samaa'un, a sky مُحَمَّدٌ muḥammadun, Muhammad ﷺ إِسْلَامٌ islaamun, Islam
And these phrases: لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ laa ilaaha illa llaah: there is no god but Allah اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ allaahu akbar: Allah is greater سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ subḥaana llaah: glory be to Allah
My challenge: every day, I read five words or one line of my Qur'an with my parent or my teacher.
What next? In the next course, "The good character of a Muslim", you will learn to be a Muslim with beautiful character, like the Prophet ﷺ, in shaa' Allah.
Little activity: make your "box of signs": on little cards, draw each sign on one side and write its sound on the other. Shuffle them and play with your family!
Understanding the lesson
Explanation With "My Arabic alphabet" and this course, you have all the tools to read vowelled Arabic, the Arabic of the Qur'an and of children's books. You only need one more thing: practice, every day, a little bit. Reading is like riding a bike: at first we wobble, then one day it becomes easy. And Arabic is the language in which Allah speaks to us in the Qur'an (12:2): every minute spent learning to read it is beautiful worship. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best of you is the one who learns the Qur'an and teaches it." (Bukhari 5027) You can already teach a younger child what you know!
Lessons to draw from it • I read a little every day so as not to forget. • I use my box of signs when I hesitate. • I teach someone else what I know.
Key points to remember • Short and long vowels, sukun, tanwin, shadda. • "Al" with moon and sun letters. • ة and hamza ء (and آ). • "The best of you is the one who learns the Qur'an and teaches it" (Bukhari 5027).
The main message I can read vowelled Arabic: I keep going every day, and I open my Qur'an with joy.
