Honest wealth and answered prayers.
Abd ar-Rahman ibn Awf was a Muhajir who arrived in Madinah with nothing. His Ansari brother Sa'd ibn ar-Rabi offered him half of his wealth and one of his wives; Abd ar-Rahman answered: "May Allah bless you in your family and wealth; show me the market" (Bukhari 2048). He became one of the wealthiest Companions through honest trade and spent generously in charity.
Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas was one of the earliest believers, accepting Islam at about seventeen. He was the first to shoot an arrow in the way of Allah, and at Uhud the Prophet ﷺ told him: "Shoot, may my father and mother be your ransom" (Bukhari 2905, Muslim 2411). He is also reported to have been a man whose supplications were answered (Tirmidhi 3751), and he led the Muslim army in Iraq.
Lesson: honest work, not begging, and never letting wealth or skill keep us from gratitude and generosity. Accounts of the Companions come from authentic reports, and where a detail is only reported in weaker sources we leave it out. We speak of all the Companions with respect and ask Allah to be pleased with them.
