الوحدة: Reading marks and first words
Putting it all together: splitting a word into syllables and reading it in one breath.
You now know the letters, the vowels, sukun, shadda and tanwin. It is time to read whole words.
The three-step method: 1. Identify each letter and its mark, from right to left. 2. Split into syllables: a letter with a vowel, sometimes followed by a letter with sukun. 3. Read the word again in one breath.
Examples: قَلَمٌ qa-la-mun: a pen بَابٌ baa-bun: a door نُورٌ nuu-run: a light سَلَامٌ sa-laa-mun: peace مَسْجِدٌ mas-ji-dun: a mosque عِلْمٌ ʿil-mun: knowledge رَحْمَةٌ raḥ-ma-tun: a mercy (with ta marbuta) مُسْلِمُونَ mus-li-muu-na: Muslims
If you get stuck on a word, go back to step 1. It is normal to go slowly at first: fluency comes from repetition, not from rushing.
Exercise: read each word three times, then hide the transliteration and read it again.
Understanding the lesson
Explanation Why split into syllables? Because Arabic syllables are simple and regular. There are mainly three kinds: a letter with a short vowel (ka), a letter with a long vowel (kaa), and a letter with a vowel followed by a letter with sukun (kal). Once you recognise these three shapes, almost every word of the Qur'an is read the same way.
Splitting also shows the root: in مَسْجِد (mas-jid) you find س ج د, the idea of prostrating; in مُسْلِمُون you find س ل م, the idea of peace and submission. So reading is also starting to recognise families of words.
Common mistakes: guessing the word from its overall shape instead of reading every mark; stopping in the middle of a word to catch your breath; reading the transliteration instead of the Arabic text; forgetting shadda or ghunna while trying to go fast.
Lessons to draw • Always follow the same method (identify, split, join): a steady method reassures and brings progress. • Hide the transliteration as soon as you can: it helps at first but slows you down if you lean on it too much. • Read a few lines in the mushaf every day, even slowly. • Think of the promise made to the one devoted to the Qur'an: it will be said to him "Recite and rise" (Abu Dawud 1464, Tirmidhi 2914) [À VÉRIFIER: numbers and wording].
Key points • Three kinds of syllables: ka, kaa, kal. • The method: identify each mark, split, then join in one breath. • Fluency comes from repetition, not from rushing.
The main message You can now read whole words: with regular practice, every page of the mushaf will open up to you.
