الوحدة: An-Nasr, Al-Masad and Al-Fil
We review the first six surahs, discover the six new ones, and how to learn them well.
Salam! Well done, you already know six surahs: Al-Fatiha, Al-Ikhlas, Al-Kawthar, Al-'Asr, Al-Falaq and An-Nas. Before learning new ones, recite them once to an adult. If one of them is a little forgotten, go over it first: one surah kept well is better than two surahs half known.
In this level 2, you will learn six new surahs. They are all at the end of the Qur'an, in the part called "Juz' 'Amma": • An-Nasr (110): 3 verses. Allah's help. • Al-Masad (111): 5 verses. The story of Abu Lahab. • Al-Fil (105): 5 verses. The army of elephants. • Quraysh (106): 4 verses. Thank you for food and safety. • Al-Ma'un (107): 7 verses. Being kind to the orphan and the poor. • Al-Kafirun (109): 6 verses. I worship only Allah.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "It will be said to the one who knows the Qur'an: read and rise, and recite as you used to recite in the world, for your place will be at the last verse you recite." (Abu Dawud 1464, Tirmidhi 2914) [À VÉRIFIER : numéros et degré d'authenticité]
Do you remember how we learn? 1. Listen to the surah several times. 2. Learn only one verse at a time. 3. Repeat that verse 5 times, then add the next one. 4. Recite the whole surah to an adult. 5. Recite it in your prayer.
New in this level: the "old + new" rule. Every day, before learning a new verse, recite a surah you already know. That way, your old surahs stay safe in your heart.
The lessons open one after the other: finish one surah before moving on to the next.
Understanding the lesson: what my new surahs tell
1. Explanation The surahs of Juz' 'Amma are short, and most of them were revealed in Mecca, at the beginning of Islam. They are mostly about faith: who Allah is, the Day of Judgement, and how to behave. The six surahs of this level also tell moments of history: • Al-Fil: an event of the year the Prophet ﷺ was born. • Quraysh: the life of his tribe in Mecca. • Al-Masad and Al-Kafirun: the difficulties the Prophet ﷺ faced when he called people to Islam. • Al-Ma'un: how true faith can be recognised. • An-Nasr: the end of his mission, when Allah gave him victory.
2. Lessons to learn • The Qur'an is not only for reciting: it is for understanding and living. • Keep what I know before adding something new: that is the "old + new" rule. • Be regular: a little every day is better than a lot just once. • Be patient with myself: if a verse is hard, I repeat it again, without giving up.
3. To remember • Six new surahs, all in Juz' 'Amma. • They are about faith and the life of the Prophet ﷺ. • Every day: an old surah, then a new verse.
4. The message of the lesson Moving forward in the Qur'an means keeping what we know, learning something new and understanding what we recite, regularly and patiently.
