Mecca before Islam, the Year of the Elephant, the birth and childhood of an orphan.
Before we start: when we say or write the Prophet's name, we add ﷺ, "may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him" (ṣalla llaahu 'alayhi wa sallam).
Mecca before Islam. Mecca is a town in the Hijaz, in a valley with no crops. It is home to the Kaaba, the house that Ibrahim (Abraham) and his son Isma'il raised to worship Allah alone (meaning of 2:127). But over the centuries, most Arabs had come to worship idols, placed even around the Kaaba. The town lived from trade and welcomed pilgrims. The tribe of Quraysh looked after it.
The Year of the Elephant. A ruler from Yemen, Abraha, tried to destroy the Kaaba with an army and elephants. Allah protected His house: this is the story of Surah Al-Fil (105). That year was remembered as the "Year of the Elephant".
The birth. According to most historians, the Prophet ﷺ was born that same year, around 570 CE, on a Monday. He said himself, when asked about fasting on Mondays: "That is the day I was born." (Muslim 1162). The exact day of the month is debated: the 12th of the month of Rabi' al-Awwal is often mentioned, but historians give other dates.
An orphan. His father, 'Abdullah, died before he was born. As was the custom, he was entrusted as a baby to a wet-nurse from the desert, Ḥalima as-Sa'diyya, and grew up for a few years among the Banu Sa'd. His mother, Amina, died when he was about six. His grandfather 'Abd al-Muttalib took him in, then, when he died, his uncle Abu Talib.
Allah would later remind him: أَلَمْ يَجِدْكَ يَتِيمًا فَآوَىٰ "Did He not find you an orphan and give you shelter?" (meaning of verse 93:6).
And you? The Prophet ﷺ knew loss and loneliness very early. Think of someone around you going through a hard time: what could you do this week to give them a little "shelter"?
Understanding the lesson
Explanation Why start with Arabia and with childhood? Because the setting helps us understand the message. The Kaaba had been built for the worship of Allah alone: the idols around it were something people slipped into over time, not its origin. So the Prophet's ﷺ message would be a return to the source, the way of Ibrahim, rather than something new.
The Year of the Elephant shows that Allah protects what He wills to protect, even when the people of Mecca have no means of defending it. And it is in that same year that the one who would give the Kaaba back to the worship of Allah alone was born.
The Prophet's ﷺ childhood is a chain of losses: a father he never knew, a mother who died early, a grandfather who passed away. He inherited neither power nor wealth. So what he became does not come from his family or his money: it is Allah who took care of him, as 93:6 says. In the same surah, Allah then tells him: "As for the orphan, do not mistreat him" (meaning of 93:9). The one who knew the loneliness of an orphan became the great protector of orphans: he said that whoever takes care of an orphan will be as close to him in Paradise as two fingers of one hand (Bukhari 5304 [À VÉRIFIER : numéro]).
Lessons to draw from it • A hard start does not decide a whole life: Allah can bring great good out of a fragile beginning. • What we have lived through can become a strength to understand and help those going through the same thing. • Recognising those who raised and protected us (parents, grandparents, relatives, a nurse) is part of gratitude. • The message of Islam is not a new invention: it leads back to the worship of Allah alone, the way of Ibrahim.
Key points to remember • The Prophet ﷺ was born in Mecca in the Year of the Elephant (around 570), on a Monday. • An orphan, he was entrusted to Halimah, then raised by his mother Aminah, his grandfather 'Abd al-Muttalib and his uncle Abu Talib.
The main message Allah takes care of those who seem alone: the orphan of Mecca became a mercy to the worlds.
