Unit: The mosque and simple sentences
A dialogue that brings the whole course together, then a review set and how to keep learning.
Here is a dialogue between Ahmad, who is visiting the centre for the first time, and Fatima, a volunteer at the front desk. Read it aloud, then hide the translation and try to understand it on your own.
أَحْمَدُ : السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ. Ahmad: Peace be upon you. فَاطِمَةُ : وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلَامُ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ. أَهْلًا وَسَهْلًا! Fatima: And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah. Welcome! أَحْمَدُ : اِسْمِي أَحْمَدُ. أَنَا مِنْ كَنَدَا. مَا اسْمُكِ؟ Ahmad: My name is Ahmad. I am from Canada. What is your name? فَاطِمَةُ : اِسْمِي فَاطِمَةُ. تَشَرَّفْنَا! Fatima: My name is Fatima. Nice to meet you! أَحْمَدُ : أَيْنَ الْإِمَامُ؟ Ahmad: Where is the imam? فَاطِمَةُ : الْإِمَامُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ، بِجَانِبِ الْمِنْبَرِ. Fatima: The imam is in the mosque, next to the minbar. أَحْمَدُ : وَأَيْنَ مَكَانُ الْوُضُوءِ؟ Ahmad: And where is the ablution area? فَاطِمَةُ : هُنَاكَ، خَلْفَ الْمَسْجِدِ. Fatima: Over there, behind the mosque. أَحْمَدُ : شُكْرًا! Ahmad: Thank you! فَاطِمَةُ : عَفْوًا. مَعَ السَّلَامَةِ. Fatima: You're welcome. Goodbye.
What you can do now: • greet, reply to salam and take leave; • introduce yourself and your family; • count from 1 to 10 and read the digits of the mushaf; • name the places and people of the mosque; • make simple sentences and ask questions.
To keep going: review the flashcards once a week, use salam and شُكْرًا every day, and ask the centre about its in-person Arabic classes.
Understanding the lesson
Explanation A dialogue brings together everything you have learned: the greeting and its enriched reply, introductions, questions with أَيْنَ, words of place and mosque words. That is how a language settles in: not through isolated lists, but through sentences used in a real situation.
Notice the choices in the dialogue: Fatima answers the salam with a fuller formula (4:86); Ahmad says مَا اسْمُكِ because he is speaking to a woman; there are nominal sentences (الْإِمَامُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ) and words of place followed by a kasra (بِجَانِبِ الْمِنْبَرِ، خَلْفَ الْمَسْجِدِ).
To remember in the long term, teachers' experience is consistent: reviewing a little, at regular intervals, is better than reviewing everything the night before. That is also the spirit of the hadith: the deeds most loved by Allah are the most consistent, even if small (Bukhari 6464, Muslim 783).
Common mistakes: reading the dialogue without saying it aloud; working only with the translation in front of you; stopping after the course without practising.
Lessons to draw • Act out the dialogue with someone, changing the names and places. • Review the flashcards once a week for a month. • Use Arabic in real situations: salam, شُكْرًا, simple questions at the mosque. • Continue with an in-person class: the teacher corrects pronunciation and encourages you. • Ask Allah to increase your knowledge: "My Lord, increase me in knowledge" (20:114).
Key points • Greeting, introducing yourself, asking where things are and saying thank you: you can do it. • Review a little, but regularly. • A language is won by using it.
The main message This course is a beginning: with a little practice every day, Arabic will become a language you use to pray, to understand and to meet others.
