Unit: The heart: honesty, patience, gratitude
Telling the truth, keeping promises and not cheating, even when it is hard.
The source. Allah says: يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَكُونُوا مَعَ الصَّادِقِينَ "O you who believe! Be mindful of Allah and be with the truthful" (9:119).
The Prophet ﷺ said, in essence: truthfulness leads to goodness, and goodness leads to Paradise; a person keeps telling the truth until they are written with Allah as truthful. Lying leads to wrongdoing, and wrongdoing leads to the Fire. (Bukhari 6094, Muslim 2607)
He also described three signs of the hypocrite: when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks his promise; when he is trusted, he betrays. (Bukhari 33, Muslim 59)
Honesty, in practice: • Tell the truth, even when you have made a mistake. Owning up takes courage. • Keep your promises. If you cannot, let the person know and apologise. • Do not cheat in exams or in games. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever deceives us is not one of us." (Muslim 101) • Give back what you borrowed, and keep the secrets you were trusted with.
What about the "little lie as a joke"? It is still a lie. You can joke without lying: the Prophet ﷺ joked, but only ever said what was true. (Tirmidhi 1990) [À VÉRIFIER: reference]
What about you? Your friend asks you to tell his parents he was at your place, when it is not true. What do you do? How can you say no without hurting him?
Understanding the lesson
Explanation Why is lying so serious? Because it destroys trust, and without trust no friendship, no family and no group can hold together. One lie often calls for another to hide it: that is what the hadith describes, where lying "leads" to wrongdoing (Bukhari 6094, Muslim 2607).
Even before revelation, the people of Mecca called the Prophet ﷺ "al-Amiin", the trustworthy one (as the books of sira report). Even those who rejected his message left their belongings with him. Honesty was his identity card.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt: truth brings peace of mind, and lying brings unease." (Tirmidhi 2518) You may have noticed it: after a lie, you feel stressed; after telling the truth, even a hard one, you feel lighter.
Scholars mention very rare exceptions, such as reconciling two people who have fallen out (Muslim 2605); they do not cover everyday excuses to avoid punishment or to look interesting. If in doubt, ask the imam. [À VÉRIFIER: how to present this exception to teens]
Common pitfalls: exaggerating to impress; "forgetting" a promise on purpose; copying homework and handing it in as your own; lying online about your age or identity.
Lessons to draw • Tell the truth even when it costs you: the courage to own up is worth more than the mistake. • Promise less, but keep what you promise. • Give back what you borrowed, on time and in good condition. • Politely refuse to lie for someone: a real friend does not make you lie.
Key points • "Be with the truthful" (9:119). • Truth leads to goodness and Paradise; lying leads to wrongdoing (Bukhari 6094, Muslim 2607). • Lying, breaking promises, betraying trust: three signs of the hypocrite (Bukhari 33, Muslim 59).
The main message Honesty makes your word precious: when people know you tell the truth, they can count on you, and Allah records you among the truthful.
