Sacred Citation & SourceIjtihad is the utmost effort of a qualified scholar to reach a ruling from the evidences. The Prophet ﷺ said: "When a judge judges and strives and is right, he has two rewards; and if he judges, strives and errs, he has one reward" (Bukhari 7352, Muslim 1716). On the day of Banu Qurayza the Prophet ﷺ told the Companions not to pray Asr except at Banu Qurayza (Bukhari 946; see also Muslim 1770). Some prayed on the road when the time was ending, understanding the aim to be speed; others delayed until they arrived, following the words. The Prophet ﷺ did not rebuke either group. Differences between sincere scholars are therefore part of the tradition and not a reason for hatred. The believer who cannot do ijtihad asks qualified scholars (16:43), holds firmly to what is agreed, and keeps good manners with those who follow another sound opinion.
