Unit: What we learn
Common qualities and how to apply them today.
What do these ten lives share? First, early and firm faith: they believed before it was easy. Second, sacrifice: wealth, safety and comfort were offered for the message. Third, trustworthiness and justice, shown by Abu Bakr, Umar and Abu Ubayda. Fourth, generosity with honest wealth, shown by Uthman and Abd ar-Rahman. Fifth, courage and loyalty, shown by Talha, az-Zubayr and Sa'd.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Do not insult my Companions. If any of you spent gold equal to Mount Uhud, it would not reach a handful of theirs, nor even half of it" (Bukhari 3673, Muslim 2541). Our love for them comes with respect and also with imitation.
A personal exercise: choose one quality (for example trustworthiness or generosity) and one concrete step you can take this week. The promise of Paradise did not stop them from working hard; the fear of falling short and hope in Allah's mercy kept them moving. Accounts of the Companions come from authentic reports, and where a detail is only reported in weaker sources we leave it out. We speak of all the Companions with respect and ask Allah to be pleased with them.
