Unit: Al-Fatiha and recitation
The end of the surah: worship, asking for help and asking to be guided on the straight path.
Verse 5 (1:5): إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ • إِيَّاكَ iy-yaa-ka: You (alone). Shadda on the ي. • نَعْبُدُ naʿ-bu-du: we worship. Sukun on the ع. • وَإِيَّاكَ wa iy-yaa-ka: and You (alone). • نَسْتَعِينُ nas-ta-ʿii-nu: we ask for help. When stopping: "nastaʿiin".
Verse 6 (1:6): اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ • اهْدِنَا ih-di-naa: guide us. The opening alif is read "i" when you start with this word; it is called hamzat al-wasl. • الصِّرَاطَ aṣ-ṣi-raa-ṭa: the path. ص is a sun letter and heavy; ط is heavy. • الْمُسْتَقِيمَ al-mus-ta-qii-ma: straight. When stopping: "al-mustaqiim".
Verse 7 (1:7): صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ • صِرَاطَ ṣi-raa-ṭa: the path. • الَّذِينَ al-la-dhii-na: of those. ل is a sun letter: shadda on the lam. • أَنْعَمْتَ an-ʿam-ta: You have blessed. • عَلَيْهِمْ ʿa-lay-him: upon them. • غَيْرِ ghay-ri: not. • الْمَغْضُوبِ al-magh-ḍuu-bi: those who have earned anger. • وَلَا wa laa: nor. • الضَّالِّينَ aḍ-ḍaal-lii-na: those who go astray. This word carries a lengthening mark: the "aa" is held clearly longer than two counts. Your teacher will show you the length. When stopping: "aḍ-ḍaalliin".
The general meaning: we worship Allah alone and ask Him alone for help; we ask Him to guide us on the straight path, the path of those He has blessed.
In a hadith qudsi, Allah says that He has divided the prayer (Al-Fatiha) between Himself and His servant, and that He answers each verse that is recited. (Muslim 395) When you read Al-Fatiha, take time to think about what you are saying.
Well done: you can now read a whole surah. Keep reciting it to your teacher until every letter is right.
Understanding the lesson
Explanation Verse 5 is the heart of the surah. In Arabic we say إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ ("You we worship") by placing "You" before the verb. This construction expresses exclusivity: You alone, and no one else. The "we" (naʿbudu, nastaʿiinu) reminds us that the believer prays with the whole community. And asking for help comes right after worship, because even to worship Allah we need His help.
Why ask for guidance in every rak'a when we are already Muslim? Because guidance is not gained once and for all: we ask to be guided, to stay on the straight path and to move forward on it. The path is described by those who followed it, "those You have blessed", whom verse 4:69 names: the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs and the righteous.
Common mistakes: reading إِيَّاكَ without shadda; reading أَنْعَمْتَ with "tu" or "ti" instead of "ta", which changes "You have blessed" into "I have blessed" or a feminine form; pronouncing the ض of الضَّالِّينَ like د, ز or ظ; not holding the long lengthening of الضَّالِّينَ.
After Al-Fatiha we say "aamiin" ("answer us"). This word is not part of the surah. The Prophet ﷺ said that when the imam says "aamiin", you say it too: whoever's aamiin coincides with that of the angels has his past sins forgiven (Bukhari 780, Muslim 410).
Lessons to draw • Ask Allah's help in everything: studies, work, family, and even prayer. • Rely on Allah alone while making your own effort: that is the meaning of "You alone we worship, You alone we ask for help". • Seek the company of good people, who help you stay on the straight path. • Make every Fatiha a real request, not an automatic recitation.
Key points • Verse 5: worship and asking for help, from Allah alone. • Verses 6-7: asking for guidance on the straight path. • أَنْعَمْتَ is read "an-ʿam-ta"; "aamiin" is said after the surah and is not part of it.
The main message Al-Fatiha is a dialogue: we praise Allah, then ask Him to guide us, and He answers each verse. Reciting it with the heart transforms the prayer.
