Unit: Al-'Asr, Al-Falaq and An-Nas
A short review to check that you know your six surahs and their meaning.
Well done! You have learned six surahs. Here is a short summary:
• Al-Fatiha (1): 7 verses. We thank Allah and ask Him for the straight path. In every rak'a of the prayer. • Al-Ikhlas (112): 4 verses. Allah is One, no one is like Him. • Al-Kawthar (108): 3 verses. Allah's gift to the Prophet ﷺ; we thank Him by praying. • Al-'Asr (103): 3 verses. Time passes: believe, do good, remind each other of the truth and of patience. • Al-Falaq (113): 5 verses. We ask Allah to protect us. • An-Nas (114): 6 verses. We ask Allah's protection from bad whispers.
So you do not forget: • Recite a different surah in your prayer each day. • In the evening before sleeping, recite Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas, as the Prophet ﷺ did. (Bukhari 5017) • Once a week, recite the six surahs to a parent or your teacher.
Take the quiz below. If you make a mistake, that is fine: go back to the lesson and try again!
Understanding the lesson: what my six surahs teach me
1. Explanation These six surahs are short, but together they form a little treasure: • Al-Fatiha and Al-Ikhlas tell me who Allah is: the Lord of the worlds, One, full of mercy, and that nothing is like Him. • Al-Kawthar and Al-'Asr tell me how to live: thanking Allah through prayer, and using my time well, with faith, good deeds, truth and patience. • Al-Falaq and An-Nas tell me where to find protection: with Allah alone, from the harms outside and the bad whispers inside.
2. Lessons to learn • A surah I have learned is a friend who stays with me: in prayer, before sleeping, when I am afraid. • Understanding what I recite makes my prayer more beautiful: I think about the meaning of the words. • What we do not look after gets forgotten: I review a little every day. • I can pass it on: recite a surah to a little brother or sister and explain its meaning.
3. To remember • Believe in Allah, the One (Al-Fatiha, Al-Ikhlas). • Thank Him and use my time well (Al-Kawthar, Al-'Asr). • Seek His protection (Al-Falaq, An-Nas).
4. The message of the lesson My first six surahs teach me to know Allah, to worship Him, to thank Him and to take refuge with Him: I keep them in my heart by reciting them and living them.
