Good habits for learning a surah by heart: listen, repeat, one small piece at a time.
Salam! Welcome to your surah course.
The Qur'an is the Word of Allah. It is made of 114 surahs (chapters), and each surah is made of verses (aayaat). In this course, you will learn six short surahs by heart. You will be able to recite them in your prayer!
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best of you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it." (Bukhari 5027)
How to learn a surah: 1. Listen to the surah several times (with a parent, a teacher or on the site). 2. Learn only one verse at a time. 3. Repeat that verse 5 times, then add the next one. 4. Recite the whole surah to an adult, to check. 5. Recite it in your prayer, so you do not forget it.
Before starting, we say: أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ (a'uudhu billaahi mina sh-shayṭaani r-rajiim), then: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ (bismi llaahi r-raḥmaani r-raḥiim).
Little tip: the Latin letters help a bit, but it is by listening and repeating that you will pronounce well. Your teacher is there to help you!
Understanding the lesson: why and how we learn the Qur'an
1. Explanation The Qur'an is not a book like any other: it is the Word of Allah, sent down to the Prophet ﷺ through the angel Jibril. When you learn a surah, you keep in your heart words that come from Allah. Before reciting, we say "a'uudhu billaahi mina sh-shayṭaani r-rajiim". Allah Himself taught us this: "When you recite the Qur'an, seek Allah's protection from Shaytan, the outcast" (meaning of verse 16:98). We ask Allah to keep Shaytan away, so that we can concentrate well. Then we say "bismi llaah": we begin in the name of Allah, asking for His help.
2. Lessons to learn • The Qur'an deserves respect: we recite it calmly, clean, and concentrating. • Learning little by little is the right method: one verse learned well is better than many verses half known. • We need a teacher: they let us hear the right pronunciation and correct us. • What we learn, we live: we recite our surahs in prayer.
3. To remember • The Qur'an is the Word of Allah. • Before reciting: a'uudhu billaah…, then bismi llaah…. • Listen, repeat one verse at a time, recite to an adult.
4. The message of the lesson Learning the Qur'an is an honour: we do it with respect, patience and Allah's help, one small piece at a time.
