Unit: The letters that look alike
The last nine letters, from ف to ي. Well done: you now know all 28 letters!
Final stretch: the last nine letters!
20. ف Faa: a little round head with one dot above. Example: فِيل fiil, the elephant 🐘 21. ق Qaaf: a round head with two dots. It is a "k" from the back of the throat. Example: قَمَر qamar, the moon 🌙 22. ك Kaaf: with a little sign inside. Example: كِتَاب kitaab, the book 📖 23. ل Laam: a big hook, like a fishing hook. Example: لَيْمُون laymuun, the lemon 🍋 24. م Miim: a little ball with a tail. Example: مَوْز mawz, bananas 🍌 25. ن Nuun: a bowl with one dot above. Example: نَحْلَة naḥla, the bee 🐝 26. ه Haa: a light "h", like when you breathe softly on a cold window (it is not the ح from lesson 2!). Example: هَدِيَّة hadiyya, the gift 🎁 27. و Waaw: a little head with a tail, like the "w" in "water". Example: وَرْدَة warda, the rose 🌹 28. ي Yaa: with two dots below. Example: يَد yad, the hand ✋
Did you know? Some surahs begin with letters on their own: الم Alif, Laam, Miim (2:1) ق Qaaf (50:1) ن Nuun (68:1) Now you recognise them all!
Little activity: sing the alphabet from beginning to end with your parent, or point to each letter on the children's "Alphabet" page. 28 letters: well done!
Understanding the lesson
Explanation You now know all 28 letters. That is a wonderful step! These letters are the letters of the Qur'an. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah gets a good deed, and a good deed counts ten times. I do not say that 'Alif Laam Miim' is one letter: alif is a letter, laam is a letter and miim is a letter." (Tirmidhi 2910 [À VÉRIFIER : numéro et degré]) Imagine: just by reading "Alif Laam Miim" at the start of Surah Al-Baqara (2:1), you earn many good deeds! What do these single letters at the start of some surahs mean? Allah knows best what they mean.
Lessons to draw from it • I say "Alhamdulillah": Allah helped me learn the 28 letters. • Every letter of the Qur'an I read gives me good deeds. • I can teach the letters to my little brother or sister: "The best of you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it." (Bukhari 5027)
Key points to remember • ف: 1 dot; ق: 2 dots; ن: 1 dot; ي: 2 dots below. • ه (light) is not ح (strong). • Some surahs begin with letters: الم (2:1), ق (50:1), ن (68:1). • One letter of the Qur'an = one good deed, which counts ten times.
The main message I know the 28 letters: every letter of the Qur'an I read brings me good deeds.
