Unit: The letters hold hands
We review everything: the 28 letters and their families, the short vowels, the sukun and the letters that hold hands.
Well done! You have come a long way. Let's review everything together.
1. The 28 letters, from right to left: ا ب ت ث ج ح خ د ذ ر ز س ش ص ض ط ظ ع غ ف ق ك ل م ن ه و ي
2. The families that look alike (only the dots change): ب ت ث · ج ح خ · د ذ · ر ز · س ش · ص ض · ط ظ · ع غ · ف ق
3. The short vowels: بَ ba (fatḥa) · بِ bi (kasra) · بُ bu (ḍamma) And the sukun ـْ: the letter rests. مِنْ min
4. The six shy letters, which do not give their hand to the left: ا د ذ ر ز و
The big challenge: read these words from your alphabet, piece by piece. جَمَل jamal 🐪 قَمَر qamar 🌙 شَمْس shams ☀️ كِتَاب kitaab 📖 بِسْمِ bismi
Little activity: make a card with your favourite letter, its example word and a drawing. Then teach that letter to someone in your family!
What next? There are still beautiful things to discover: long vowels, the shadda, the tanwin, the article "al"… You will see them in level 2, in the course "I read Arabic", in shaa' Allah, to read the Qur'an better and better.
Understanding the lesson
Explanation In a few lessons, you learned the 28 letters of the language of the Qur'an, the short vowels that make them speak, the sukun that makes them rest, and how they hold hands. That is the base of all reading in Arabic! Allah loves those who learn. He taught Adam the names of all things (2:31), and He "taught by the pen" (96:4). What you have learned, you can now share: "The best of you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it." (Bukhari 5027)
Lessons to draw from it • I say "Alhamdulillah" for everything I have learned. • I keep reading a little every day, so I do not forget. • I help a brother, a sister or a friend learn the letters. • I ask Allah: "Rabbi zidnii 'ilmaa" (20:114).
Key points to remember • 28 letters, from right to left, in families that look alike. • Fatḥa = a, kasra = i, ḍamma = u, sukun = rest. • Six shy letters: ا د ذ ر ز و. • The best people learn the Qur'an and teach it (Bukhari 5027).
The main message I now know the alphabet of the Qur'an: I thank Allah, I keep going every day, and I share what I have learned.
