Unit: The short vowels
The sukun ـْ makes the letter rest. With it, we join the sounds and read real words, and even "Bismillah"!
There is another little sign: the sukun ـْ It is a tiny circle above the letter. It means: "This letter is resting, it has no vowel." We just say it on its own, stuck to the sound before it.
بَ + بْ = بَبْ bab مِ + نْ = مِنْ min (from)
Let's read words from your alphabet together, piece by piece: شَمْس → sham + s → shams, the sun ☀️ خُبْز → khub + z → khubz, bread 🍞 مَوْز → maw + z → mawz, bananas 🍌 صَقْر → ṣaq + r → ṣaqr, the falcon 🦅 وَرْدَة → war + da → warda, the rose 🌹
Did you notice? At the end of a word, when we stop, the last letter rests too. And the round ة at the end of وَرْدَة is read "a" when we stop.
And now, the best part: you can read words you say every day! بِسْمِ → bis + mi → bismi (in the name of) الْحَمْدُ → al + ḥam + du → al-ḥamdu (praise)
Little activity: with your parent, look for the little sukun circle in بِسْمِ اللَّهِ, at the start of your Qur'an or in your notebook. Then read "bismi" on your own!
Understanding the lesson
Explanation With the letters, the short vowels and the sukun, you have everything you need to read real words! We go piece by piece: "bis", then "mi", and that makes "bismi". It is like climbing stairs: one step, then another. Little by little, we reach the top. The Prophet ﷺ said that the deeds Allah loves most are the ones we do regularly, even if they are small (Bukhari 6464, Muslim 783 [À VÉRIFIER : numéros]). Reading a little every day is better than a lot only once. And seeking to learn is a beautiful thing: "Whoever takes a path to seek knowledge, Allah makes easy for him a path to Paradise." (Muslim 2699)
Lessons to draw from it • I read a little every day, even five minutes. • I read piece by piece, without losing heart. • Learning to read is a path to Paradise: I am proud of my efforts, and I thank Allah.
Key points to remember • The sukun ـْ (little circle): the letter rests. • We read in pieces: شَمْس = sham + s. • بِسْمِ = bis + mi; الْحَمْدُ = al + ḥam + du. • Seeking knowledge is a path to Paradise (Muslim 2699).
The main message With the letters, the short vowels and the sukun, I can read real words: a little every day!
