Unit: Fasting and hajj
We review everything: the story of Jibril, the house with five pillars, and what each pillar teaches us.
Well done! You now know the whole house of Islam. Let's review together.
"Islam is built on five" (Bukhari 8, Muslim 16):
1. The shahada 🤲: I believe and say that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad ﷺ is His Messenger. 2. Prayer 🕌: five times a day, Fajr, Dhuhr, 'Asr, Maghrib, 'Isha, facing the Kaaba. 3. Zakat 💝: each year, those who have enough give a small part to the poor. I already give ṣadaqa. 4. The fast of Ramadan 🌙: from dawn to sunset, during the 9th month. I practise. 5. Hajj 🕋: once in a lifetime, for those who can, in Makkah.
The pillar game: your parent says a word, you say which pillar it belongs to! "Suhur" → fasting. "Labbayka" → hajj. "Fajr" → prayer. "2.5%" → zakat. "Ash-hadu" → shahada.
My week of pillars: • Every day: I say the shahada and I practise a prayer with my family. • Every week: I put a coin in the sharing box. • One day: I practise fasting for a few hours. • Always: I make a dua to go on hajj one day.
What next? In the next course, "Wudu and prayer", you will learn to make wudu and to pray step by step, in shaa' Allah.
Little activity: take your drawing of the house with five pillars. Colour a pillar each time you do something for it this week!
Understanding the lesson
Explanation The five pillars hold together, like the columns of the same house. The shahada comes before everything; prayer comes back every day; zakat and fasting come back every year; hajj is done once in a lifetime. Each pillar teaches us something: the shahada, love of Allah and His Prophet ﷺ; prayer, remembering Allah; zakat, sharing; fasting, patience; hajj, equality and trust. You are still young: some pillars are not yet obligatory for you. But like the companions with their children, you practise starting now, so that your house is strong when you grow up. The Prophet ﷺ said that the deeds Allah loves most are the ones we do regularly, even if they are small (Bukhari 6464, Muslim 783 [À VÉRIFIER : numéros]).
Lessons to draw from it • I take care of my five pillars, a little every day. • I thank Allah for making me a Muslim. • I teach someone in my family what I know about the pillars.
Key points to remember • Islam is built on five (Bukhari 8, Muslim 16), as Jibril asked the Prophet ﷺ (Muslim 8). • Shahada, prayer, zakat, fast of Ramadan, hajj. • Every day, every year, once in a lifetime. • The deeds Allah loves are the most regular ones, even if small.
The main message My house of Islam stands on five pillars: I know them, I love them, and I practise every day to make them strong.
