Unit: The work on the self
Two diseases that eat good deeds.
The Prophet ﷺ defined pride: "Pride is rejecting the truth and looking down on people" (Muslim 91). Whoever has an atom's weight of pride in the heart will not enter Paradise, in the sense of the hadith, until it is cleansed. The cure is humility: remembering that all we have is from Allah, accepting the truth from whoever brings it, and serving others.
Envy (hasad) is wishing that someone loses a blessing. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Do not envy one another, do not hate one another, do not turn away from one another, and be, O servants of Allah, brothers" (Bukhari 6064, Muslim 2559). Distinguish envy from ghibta, a permitted wish to have a similar good, without wishing the other to lose it (Bukhari 73, Muslim 816).
Cures for envy: be grateful for what you have, pray for the other person's good, and give a gift to the person you envy. Both diseases are treated by knowing Allah and knowing yourself. Spiritual refinement is built on the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah, with the obligations first; if you feel you need guidance for a particular struggle, speak to a trusted, qualified teacher.
