Unit: The goal: a sound heart
Why the state of the heart matters.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "In the body there is a piece of flesh: if it is sound, the whole body is sound, and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. It is the heart" (Bukhari 52, Muslim 1599). The Qur'an promises success to the one who purifies himself: "He who purifies it has succeeded, and he who corrupts it has failed" (91:9-10), and "Successful is the one who purifies himself" (87:14).
Tazkiya means purification and growth. It is not a separate religion or a set of secret practices, but the work of sincerely applying the Qur'an and Sunnah to the inner life: faith, sincerity, love of Allah, fear and hope, patience and gratitude. The Qur'an describes the saving state at the end: "The day when neither wealth nor children will benefit, except the one who comes to Allah with a sound heart" (26:88-89).
Like the body, the heart can be healthy or sick, and it needs care every day. Spiritual refinement is built on the Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah, with the obligations first; if you feel you need guidance for a particular struggle, speak to a trusted, qualified teacher.
