Unit: The day's prayers and a life of prayer
The value of praying in congregation, how to follow the imam, what to do when arriving late, then the Friday prayer: who must attend, its sunnas, and how it unfolds.
Congregational prayer (ṣalaat al-jamaa'a) "Prayer in congregation is worth twenty-seven times prayer made alone" (Bukhari 645, Muslim 650). For men, praying the obligatory prayers in congregation is an obligation for the Hanbalis, a collective obligation for some Shafi'is, a strongly emphasised sunna for the Hanafis and Malikis [À VÉRIFIER : les écoles diffèrent, l'imam tranche]. Women may come to the mosque: "Do not prevent the female servants of Allah from going to the mosques of Allah" (Bukhari 900, Muslim 442).
Following the imam • "The imam is there to be followed: when he says 'Allaahu akbar', say 'Allaahu akbar'; when he bows, bow" (Bukhari 722, Muslim 414). Make each movement after him, never before, nor at the same time. The Prophet ﷺ warned whoever raises his head before the imam (Bukhari 691, Muslim 427). • The rows: straight, shoulder to shoulder, feet aligned, no gaps; complete the first row before the next (Bukhari 723, Muslim 433). Men in front, then children, then women, or according to the mosque's arrangements [À VÉRIFIER : les écoles diffèrent, l'imam tranche]. • Who leads: the one most versed in the Qur'an, then the most knowledgeable of the Sunna (Muslim 673). With two people, the follower stands to the imam's right (Bukhari 699).
Arriving late (al-masbuuq) • Come calmly, without running (Bukhari 636, Muslim 602). • Make the opening takbiir standing, then join the imam in whatever position he is in. • A rak'a counts if you join the imam before he rises from bowing, for the majority (Abu Dawud 893) [À VÉRIFIER : numéro] [À VÉRIFIER : les écoles diffèrent, l'imam tranche]. • After the imam's salaam, stand up and complete what you missed: "What you catch, pray it; what you missed, complete it" (Bukhari 636, Muslim 602). The order of recitation in what you complete [À VÉRIFIER : les écoles diffèrent, l'imam tranche].
Jumu'ah, the Friday prayer يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا نُودِيَ لِلصَّلَاةِ مِن يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَاسْعَوْا إِلَىٰ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَذَرُوا الْبَيْعَ yaa ayyuha lladhiina aamanuu idhaa nuudiya li-ṣ-ṣalaati min yawmi l-jumu'ati fa-s'aw ilaa dhikri llaahi wa dharu l-bay' "O you who believe, when the call is made for the prayer on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trade" (meaning of part of verse 62:9). Listen to verses 62:9-11 in the recitation block. • Who must attend: the adult Muslim man, of sound mind, resident, in good health. Not obliged: women, children, the sick, travellers (Abu Dawud 1067) [À VÉRIFIER : numéro]. They pray Dhuhr; if they attend Jumu'ah, it replaces Dhuhr. • How it unfolds: at Dhuhr time, the call; the imam gives the sermon (khuṭba) in two parts, sitting briefly between them; then 2 rak'as are prayed aloud, replacing the 4 rak'as of Dhuhr. • The sunnas: ghusl (Bukhari 877, Muslim 844), fine clean clothes, perfume for men, the siwaak, coming early (Bukhari 881, Muslim 850), sending many prayers upon the Prophet ﷺ; reading Surah Al-Kahf that day [À VÉRIFIER : les écoles diffèrent, l'imam tranche]. • During the sermon, listen in silence: "If you say to your neighbour 'Be quiet' while the imam is giving the sermon, you have spoken idly" (Bukhari 934, Muslim 851). Someone entering during the sermon prays two short rak'as before sitting (Muslim 875) [À VÉRIFIER : les écoles diffèrent, l'imam tranche]. • On Friday there is a moment when Allah answers supplication (Bukhari 935, Muslim 852). • Missing Jumu'ah without excuse is serious; three times through negligence, and Allah seals the heart (Abu Dawud 1052, Tirmidhi 500) [À VÉRIFIER : numéros]. The language of the sermon, sunna prayers before and after Jumu'ah: [À VÉRIFIER : les écoles diffèrent, l'imam tranche]
Exercise: this week, pray at least one prayer in congregation at the mosque and observe: where people stand, how the rows form, how latecomers complete their prayer.
Understanding the lesson
Explanation Congregational prayer shows Islam in a single picture: rich and poor, young and old, of every background, shoulder to shoulder, behind one imam, facing one qibla. It teaches discipline (following, not getting ahead), humility (standing where there is room) and brotherhood (greeting one another, asking after one another). For a new Muslim, the mosque is also the best school: you learn the prayer by doing it beside others, as the companions learned it by watching the Prophet ﷺ. Do not be afraid of making mistakes: follow the imam, and ask your questions afterwards. Jumu'ah is the Muslims' weekly festival: "The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday" (Muslim 854). The sermon is a teaching: listen to it like a class, in silence, without your phone. For women, coming to the mosque is permitted and can be real support; praying at home is also good, depending on each woman's situation [À VÉRIFIER : les écoles diffèrent, l'imam tranche]. This choice in no way lessens their place in the community. Points where the schools differ: the status of congregational prayer for men; whether a rak'a counts when joining the imam in bowing; reciting Al-Faatiḥa behind the imam; the place of women and children; two rak'as during the sermon; sunnas before and after Jumu'ah; the language of the sermon; travellers and Jumu'ah [À VÉRIFIER : les écoles diffèrent, l'imam tranche].
Lessons to draw from it • Pray at least one prayer a day in congregation when possible. • Come early on Friday, after ghusl, and switch off your phone. • Never get ahead of the imam. • Arriving late is no reason to stay apart: join the imam and complete.
Key points to remember • In congregation: twenty-seven times more (Bukhari 645, Muslim 650). • Follow the imam, after him, never before (Bukhari 722, Muslim 414). • Latecomer: join the imam, then complete (Bukhari 636, Muslim 602). • Jumu'ah: sermon then 2 rak'as, obligatory for the resident man (62:9).
The main message Praying together makes prayer a bond between believers: we stand side by side before Allah, follow one imam, and on Friday gather to listen and pray.
