Sacred Citation & SourceThe Prophet ﷺ said: "Actions are by intentions, and everyone will have what he intended" (Bukhari 1). The fast is not only leaving food: it is leaving it for Allah. Verse 2:184 speaks of fasting "a limited number of days", and says that to fast is better for you if you only knew. Scholars teach that the intention is in the heart; no special words are required, and schools differ on when exactly it must be made for obligatory fasts. Today, make your intention for the whole month, then renew it each evening. Ask yourself: for whom am I doing this?
