He said: "Say: Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbul-afwa fa'fu anni, O Allah, You are Pardoning and love pardon, so pardon me" (Tirmidhi 3513, Ibn Majah 3850). Afw means to erase, not only to forgive. The last verse of Surah Al-Baqarah teaches another gentle prayer: "Our Lord, do not burden us beyond what we can bear. Pardon us, forgive us and have mercy on us" (2:286).
