Unit: The books, the messengers and the Last Day
Death and the grave, the resurrection, the judgement, then Paradise and Hell: what the sources tell us, and why this belief gives life meaning.
This life has an end, and it is not the end of everything. Believing in the Last Day means believing everything Allah and His Messenger ﷺ have told us about what comes after death.
1. Death and the grave (al-barzakh) Every soul will taste death (meaning of verse 3:185). In the grave, a person is questioned: who is your Lord? what is your religion? who is this man who was sent among you? The believer answers: "My Lord is Allah, my religion is Islam, he is the Messenger of Allah" (Abu Dawud 4753). [À VÉRIFIER : numéro, et niveau de détail sur la vie dans la tombe pour les ados] These answers are not just learned by heart: they are built over a whole life.
2. The Hour and its signs Only Allah knows when the Hour will come (meaning of verse 31:34). The Prophet ﷺ mentioned signs of it, minor and major (for example Muslim 2901). But when a man asked him "When will the Hour come?", he answered: "What have you prepared for it?" (Bukhari 6171, Muslim 2639). The real question is not "when?", but "how am I preparing for it?".
3. The resurrection The Trumpet will be blown, then all human beings will be brought back to life (39:68). To the one who asks who will give life to bones turned to dust, Allah answers: "The One who created them the first time" (meaning of verses 36:78-79).
4. The judgement • Everyone receives the book of their deeds, in the right hand or in the left hand (69:19-25). • Deeds are weighed on a perfectly just scale: "We will set up the scales of justice… no soul will be wronged in the least" (meaning of verse 21:47). • "Whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it" (meaning of verse 99:7). • The Prophet ﷺ will have a pool (al-ḥawḍ) where he will welcome his community (Bukhari 6579), and he will intercede for it with Allah's permission. • There is a bridge (aṣ-ṣiraaṭ) over Hell, which people will cross according to their deeds (Bukhari 7439). 5. Paradise and Hell Paradise: "What no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and what has never occurred to a human heart" (hadith qudsi, Bukhari 3244; see 32:17). The greatest joy of its people will be to see their Lord (meaning of verses 75:22-23). Hell is real: a warning to take seriously, "protect yourselves and your families from a Fire" (meaning of verse 66:6).
Listen to Surah Az-Zalzala (99) in the recitation block: it describes that Day in eight verses.
Challenge: write down one thing you want to have "prepared" for that Day, and start it this week.
Understanding the lesson
Explanation The Last Day is part of the ghayb: we know of it only what the Qur'an and the authentic Sunna tell us. We believe in it as it is described, without trying to picture every detail or adding unfounded stories. This belief gives life its true meaning: "It is He who created death and life to test you: which of you is best in deeds" (meaning of verse 67:2). Nothing is lost: neither good done in secret, nor injustice suffered. Allah's justice is perfect, and His mercy is immense: He has a hundred parts of mercy, and sent down only one of them to the earth (Bukhari 6000, Muslim 2752). We live between hope and fear: hope in Allah's mercy prevents despair, fear of His judgement prevents carelessness. Never one without the other. We do not decide the fate of a particular person: only Allah judges hearts and how lives end. Common misunderstandings: living in constant fear or, on the contrary, thinking "we'll see later"; spending your time looking for the date of the end of the world in videos; judging who will go to Paradise or Hell.
Lessons to draw from it • Prepare instead of calculating: "What have you prepared for it?" (Bukhari 6171). • No good deed is too small: a smile, a helping hand, a true word all count (99:7). • Repentance is now: as long as we live, the door is open. • Do not be swayed by content that plays on fear: go back to the sources and to your teachers.
Key points to remember • The grave (barzakh) and its three questions. • The Hour: only Allah knows its date (31:34); signs have been foretold. • The resurrection, the book of deeds, the scale (21:47), the pool, the bridge. • Paradise and Hell are real; the greatest joy: seeing Allah (75:22-23).
The main message Believing in the Last Day means living with the knowledge that every deed counts: we move forward with hope and seriousness, towards a Lord who is just and infinitely merciful.
