Unit: Earning and dealing honestly
Paying on time and keeping your word.
Allah gave the longest verse of the Qur'an to debts: "When you contract a debt for a fixed term, write it down" (2:282). Writing and witnesses protect both sides and prevent disputes.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The delay of a person who has the means to pay is an injustice" (Bukhari 2287, Muslim 1564). If you are in difficulty, Allah encourages the lender to give you time, and it is better still to forgive the debt (2:280). If you borrow, intend to repay: the Prophet ﷺ said that whoever takes people's money intending to repay, Allah will help him repay (Bukhari 2387).
Promises and trusts: "Fulfil the contracts" (5:1) and "Fulfil the covenant, for the covenant will be questioned" (17:34). A deposit (amana) must be returned to its owner (4:58). Keeping your word is a sign of faith; breaking it deliberately is a trait of hypocrisy (Bukhari 33, Muslim 59). Schools of law and contemporary scholars differ on some practical details; this lesson gives the common principles and flags differences without settling them. For your own situation, consult a qualified scholar.
