نص قرآني / حديث شريفTwo values meet in organ donation. The body is honoured (17:70), and the Prophet ﷺ taught that breaking the bone of a dead person is like breaking it while he is alive (Abu Dawud 3207, Ibn Majah 1616). But saving a life is a great good (5:32). In the 1980s the International Islamic Fiqh Academy and other bodies permitted transplants under conditions: no sale of organs, no serious harm to a living donor, free and informed consent, a real medical need, and respect for the dead donor's wishes or the family's consent. Some scholars object, holding that a person does not own his body to give it away. The definition of death is also debated: several councils accepted irreversible brain-stem death as death when strict medical criteria are met, while other scholars and doctors hold that life continues until the heart and breathing stop. Families facing this situation should consult a trusted doctor and a qualified scholar. This lesson explains how scholars and councils reason; it is not a personal fatwa. For your own situation, ask a qualified scholar and your doctor.
