Good character at the heart of the message: the example of the Prophet ﷺ and what he taught.
Faith is not limited to beliefs and rituals: it shows in behaviour. Allah says to the Prophet ﷺ: وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ "And you are truly of a tremendous character" (68:4).
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best of you are those with the best character." (Bukhari 3559, Muslim 2321) He also said: "I was sent to perfect good character." (Bukhari's Al-Adab al-Mufrad, 273) [À VÉRIFIER: reference and authenticity as used by the centre]
Some qualities taught by Islam: • Sincerity and honesty, in words and in business. • Mercy and gentleness, towards people and animals. • Humility: not thinking oneself above others. • Keeping promises and honouring commitments. • Being a good neighbour and respecting everyone.
Wanting for others what you want for yourself. The Prophet ﷺ said: "None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself." (Bukhari 13, Muslim 45)
Diversity is willed by Allah: "O people! We created you from a male and a female, and made you nations and tribes so that you may know one another. The most noble of you before Allah is the most God-conscious" (meaning of verse 49:13). In Québec as elsewhere, a Muslim lives respectfully among neighbours, colleagues and friends, whatever their origin or religion.
To go further, the course "The good character of a Muslim" (for teens) explores these themes in more depth.
Understanding the lesson
Explanation Good character has two sides: towards Allah (accepting His decrees, obeying Him willingly) and towards people (gentleness, honesty, generosity). The Prophet ﷺ summed up goodness by saying: "Righteousness (al-birr) is good character." (Muslim 2553) He also advised: "Be mindful of Allah wherever you are, follow a bad deed with a good one that wipes it out, and treat people with good character." (Tirmidhi 1987)
Why does character matter so much? Because that is where faith becomes visible. Acts of worship are often hidden; behaviour is seen by family, colleagues and neighbours. And Allah does not look at appearance or wealth, but at hearts and deeds (Muslim 2564).
Character can be worked on. The Prophet ﷺ himself asked Allah in the prayer: "Guide me to the best of character; none guides to it but You." (Muslim 771) We improve by observing ourselves, apologising when we are wrong, and keeping good company.
Common misunderstandings: thinking piety is measured only by prayer; keeping kindness for Muslims only; confusing firmness with harshness.
Lessons to draw • Choose one quality a month (patience, honesty…) and work on it in practice. • Follow a mistake with a good deed and a sincere apology. • Be the same person at the mosque, at work and at home. • Treat everyone with respect, whatever their origin or religion (49:13).
Key points • The best are those with the best character (Bukhari 3559, Muslim 2321). • Love for others what you love for yourself (Bukhari 13, Muslim 45). • Character is worked on and asked of Allah (Muslim 771).
The main message Good character is faith in action: it is through character that Islam is seen and understood in everyday life.
