Intention, consistency, repentance and community: landmarks to carry on after this course.
Intention. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Actions are only by intentions, and each person will have only what he intended." (Bukhari 1, Muslim 1907) An ordinary act (working honestly, caring for your family, helping a neighbour) can become worship when done for Allah.
Consistency. The Prophet ﷺ said that the deeds most loved by Allah are the most consistent, even if they are small. (Bukhari 6464, Muslim 783) A little every day is better than a lot once.
A possible day: • the five prayers, on time; • a few verses of the Qur'an, even one, with its translation; • remembrance of Allah (dhikr): "subḥaana llaah", "al-ḥamdu lillaah", "Allaahu akbar"; • one kind act towards someone.
Food. Pork and alcohol are forbidden; for the rest (meat, ingredients, etc.), views differ between the schools on some details; ask the imam.
Mistakes and repentance. Every human being makes mistakes. Allah says: "O My servants who have wronged yourselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Allah forgives all sins" (meaning of verse 39:53). Repenting means regretting, stopping, and resolving not to do it again; if you have wronged someone, you make it right as far as you can.
Community. The Friday prayer (jumu'a), classes, Ramadan meals and the centre's activities are chances to feel supported. Do not hesitate to ask for help, and to offer it.
Thank you for following this course. Suggested next step: "Reading the Qur'an: first steps".
Understanding the lesson
Explanation This last lesson gathers landmarks for the long run. Intention turns ordinary acts into worship; consistency makes faith grow little by little; repentance lets us start again after every mistake; the community supports us when our energy fades.
Islam calls for balance. The companion Salman said to his brother in faith, who prayed all night and fasted every day: "Your Lord has a right over you, your body has a right over you, and your family has a right over you: give each its due." The Prophet ﷺ approved: "Salman has spoken the truth." (Bukhari 1968) He also said: "The religion is ease, and no one makes it excessive without it overwhelming him." (Bukhari 39)
Repentance is always open: "All the children of Adam make mistakes, and the best of those who make mistakes are those who repent." (Tirmidhi 2499) Faith rises and falls; what matters is coming back.
Common pitfalls: starting very strong then giving everything up; comparing oneself with others; staying alone with one's questions; believing one mistake cancels the whole road travelled.
Lessons to draw • Choose two or three simple habits and keep them, rather than ten you will drop. • Renew your intention in the morning: work, study and care for your family for Allah. • Repent quickly, without despair (39:53). • Join at least one regular activity at the centre: a class, the Friday prayer, volunteering. • Be patient with yourself: faith is a path, not a race.
Key points • Actions are judged by intentions (Bukhari 1, Muslim 1907). • The deeds most loved by Allah are the most consistent, even if small (Bukhari 6464, Muslim 783). • The religion is ease (Bukhari 39); repentance is always possible.
The main message Living your faith means moving forward a little every day, with balance and sincerity, surrounded by the community, and returning to Allah after every misstep.
