الوحدة: الشهادتان
The text of the shahada, how to say it and the meaning of its two parts.
The shahada is the doorway into Islam and its first pillar.
In Arabic: أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ
Pronunciation: ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illa-llaah, wa ash-hadu anna Muḥammadan rasuulu-llaah.
Meaning: "I testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."
First part: laa ilaaha illa-llaah. It contains a negation and an affirmation. We deny that anything deserves worship (no idol, no person, no money, no desire), then affirm that Allah alone deserves it. This is tawhid, the oneness of Allah, at the heart of the message of all the prophets.
Second part: Muḥammadan rasuulu-llaah. We recognise that Muhammad ﷺ was sent by Allah. We believe what he conveyed, follow his example in worship and conduct, and love him. He is the last of the prophets: "Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets" (meaning of verse 33:40).
Scholars explain that the shahada is said knowing its meaning, with conviction and sincerity, and is then lived through one's actions. It is not a magic formula: it is a commitment of the heart, the tongue and the body.
Understanding the lesson
Explanation The word ilaah means what is worshipped: what one loves to the point of submitting to it, what one fears, what one hopes will save. Saying "laa ilaaha illa-llaah" is deciding that nothing (money, reputation, a person, a desire) will take the place in the heart that belongs to Allah alone. It is not enough to believe that Allah is the Creator: the shahada commits us to worship Him alone. That is the message of all the prophets: "We sent no messenger before you without revealing to him: there is no deity except Me, so worship Me" (meaning of verse 21:25).
Scholars often list conditions for the shahada to be fully lived: knowing its meaning, certainty, sincerity, truthfulness, love, acceptance and submission. [À VÉRIFIER: list taught at the centre] These are not exam conditions: they are qualities one develops throughout life.
The second part is lived in practice: believing what the Prophet ﷺ conveyed, following what he commanded, avoiding what he forbade, and worshipping Allah the way he taught. Muslims love and honour the Prophet ﷺ but do not worship him: he is a human being and a servant of Allah, chosen to convey His message (meaning of verse 18:110).
Common misunderstandings: thinking the shahada is a formula that protects without changing anything in one's life; or believing one must be perfect to have the right to say it.
Lessons to draw • Ask yourself regularly what holds first place in your heart. • Repeat the shahada thinking of its meaning, for example after wudu (Muslim 234). • Get to know the Prophet ﷺ, his life and character, so as to love and follow him consciously. • Measure your faith by your actions, gently and without despair.
Key points • First part: nothing deserves worship except Allah (tawhid). • Second part: Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah and the last of the prophets (33:40). • The shahada is said with knowledge, conviction and sincerity, then lived.
The main message The shahada is a promise: to give one's heart to Allah alone and follow the path taught by His Messenger ﷺ.
