الوحدة: الْمَدُّ وَالْوَقْفُ وَالتِّلَاوَةُ
We go over every rule, verse by verse, in An-Naas, Al-Kawthar and Al-Ikhlaaṣ, with a method for preparing a recitation.
Last lesson: we put everything together on surahs you recite in prayer.
The five-step method 1. I read the passage slowly, without reciting. 2. I find the rules: noon and meem sakinah, ghunnah, qalqalah, madd, heavy letters, stops. 3. I listen to a reciter on the site's Qur'an page. 4. I recite and record myself. 5. I have my teacher listen to me.
Surah An-Naas (114) • 114:1 to 114:3: ghunnah on the noon with shadda in النَّاسِ; heavy ra in بِرَبِّ; madd at a stop on النَّاسِ, with the same length at every verse. • 114:4: ikhfa in مِن شَرِّ; ghunnah in الْخَنَّاسِ. • 114:6: ghunnah on the noon with shadda in الْجِنَّةِ.
Surah Al-Kawthar (108) • 108:1: ghunnah on إِنَّا; separated madd on the ا of إِنَّا before أَعْطَيْنَاكَ; at the stop, heavy ra in الْكَوْثَرَ. • 108:2: heavy ra in لِرَبِّكَ; izhar in وَانْحَرْ (noon sakinah then ح); heavy ra at the stop. • 108:3: ghunnah on إِنَّ; connected madd in شَانِئَكَ; small qalqalah on the ب of الْأَبْتَرُ.
Surah Al-Ikhlaaṣ (112), already heard in the qalqalah lesson • 112:1: heavy lam of Allah in هُوَ اللَّهُ; qalqalah at the stop on أَحَدٌ. If you join أَحَدٌ to the next verse, a special rule applies: your teacher will let you hear it. For now, stop at each verse. • 112:3: lip izhar of the meem sakinah in لَمْ يَلِدْ; two qalqalahs. • 112:4: idgham without ghunnah in يَكُن لَّهُ; izhar of the tanwin in كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ; qalqalah at the stop.
Your tajwid toolbox • Makharij: five areas (mouth, throat, tongue, lips, nose). • Heavy letters: خُصَّ ضَغْطٍ قِظْ; ra and the lam of Allah depending on the vowel. • Qalqalah: قُطْبُ جَدٍّ with sukun. • Noon sakinah and tanwin: izhar, idgham, iqlab, ikhfa. • Meem sakinah: lip ikhfa, idgham, izhar; ghunnah on نّ and مّ. • Madd: natural 2; the long madds with the lengths set by your teacher. [À VÉRIFIER : l'imam choisit les durées, cf. note sur le cours 05] • Stopping: verse endings and the mushaf signs.
What next? In the next course, "The six pillars of faith", you will study what a Muslim believes, starting from the hadith of Jibril. Keep reciting every day: the Prophet ﷺ said: "The best of you is the one who learns the Qur'an and teaches it." (Bukhari 5027)
Final challenge: pick a surah from Juz 'Amma you have not studied yet (for example Al-Fiil, 105). Apply the five-step method and present your analysis to your teacher.
Understanding the lesson
Explanation Knowing the rules one by one is not enough: when you recite, they all come together, sometimes two in the same word. That is why we finish with whole surahs: you learn to see, at a glance, what each word requires. The surahs of Juz 'Amma are ideal: short, known by heart, recited in prayer. Working on them with tajwid directly improves your prayers. The five-step method (read, spot, listen, recite, be listened to) is the same for every new surah: it is what makes you independent.
Lessons to draw from it • A little every day: one short surah prepared with the method is worth more than a page recited fast. • Keep your teacher as your reference: tajwid is checked by ear. • Pass on what you know: explain a rule to someone younger. "The best of you is the one who learns the Qur'an and teaches it" (Bukhari 5027). • Recite with your heart: the rules serve the Word of Allah, they do not replace it.
Key points to remember • Method: read, spot, listen, recite, be listened to. • An-Naas: ghunnah of النَّاسِ, ikhfa of مِن شَرِّ, the same madd at every verse ending. • Al-Kawthar: ghunnah, separated and connected madd, heavy ra, small qalqalah. • Al-Ikhlaaṣ: heavy lam of Allah, qalqalah at every verse ending, idgham without ghunnah in يَكُن لَّهُ.
The main message Tajwid comes alive when you apply it to your own surahs: a little every day, in front of a teacher, to recite the Qur'an as it was passed down.
