How to stop on a word, where to stop (verse endings and mushaf signs), and how to start again without changing the meaning.
Reciting also means knowing how to breathe: where to stop, how to stop, and how to start again. This is waqf (الْوَقْف, stopping) and ibtidaa' (الِابْتِدَاء, starting again).
1. How to stop on a word • The last vowel drops and the letter takes a sukun: الرَّحِيمِ → "ar-raḥiim". • A ـٌ or ـٍ tanwin disappears: خُسْرٍ (103:2) → "khusr". • A ـً tanwin becomes an "aa" of two counts: تَوَّابًا (110:3) → "tawwaabaa". • Taa' marbuuṭa ة is said with a light "h": you hear "a" followed by a small breath (that is the "a" at a stop from "I read Arabic"). • At a stop, you meet two rules you already know: the big qalqalah (الْفَلَقْ) and the madd at a stop (الرَّحِيمْ).
2. Where to stop • At the end of a verse, marked in the mushaf by a small circle with its number (). It is the best place. Umm Salama described the Prophet's ﷺ recitation verse by verse: he would stop at "al-ḥamdu lillaahi rabbi l-'aalamiin", then at "ar-raḥmaani r-raḥiim"… (Tirmidhi 2927, Abu Dawud 4001) [À VÉRIFIER : numéros] • Inside a verse, the mushaf gives signs above the line: مـ: compulsory stop (stop, or the meaning changes). لا: do not stop here. ج: you may stop or continue. صلى: you may stop, but continuing is better. قلى: you may continue, but stopping is better. ∴ … ∴: stop at one of the two places, but not at both. [À VÉRIFIER : signes du mushaf utilisé au centre (ici ceux de l'impression de Médine)]
3. Do not change the meaning A badly placed stop can make the Qur'an say what it does not say. Example: لَا تَقْرَبُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَأَنتُمْ سُكَارَىٰ (4:43), "do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated". Stopping after الصَّلَاةَ would give "do not approach prayer": the meaning is broken.
4. Starting again • If you run out of breath in the middle of a sentence, stop, breathe, then start again one or two words earlier, where the sentence has a complete meaning. • When you begin with a word starting with ال or with an alif without hamza, the helping vowel that faded away in the middle (the "a" of "al" in "I read Arabic") is pronounced at the start: "a" for ال, الْحَمْدُ → "al-ḥamdu"; "i" in اهْدِنَا (1:6) → "ihdinaa".
Listen to Al-'Aṣr in the recitation block, and notice the three stops at the verse endings: "wal-'aṣr", "khusr", "biṣ-ṣabr".
Challenge: open your mushaf at a page of Juz 'Amma and find three pause signs. Tell your teacher what each one means.
Understanding the lesson
Explanation You cannot recite a whole passage in one breath: you have to stop. But a stop is not neutral: it cuts the sentence, and the cut sentence must keep a correct meaning. That is why scholars studied waqf, and why the mushaf carries pause signs. The end of a verse is the safest stop, and that is how the Prophet ﷺ recited. Inside a verse, the signs guide you: مـ requires, لا forbids, and the others leave the choice, with a preference. To start again, you do not begin just anywhere: you go back to where the sentence has a complete meaning.
Lessons to draw from it • Prepare a passage before reciting it: find the verse endings and the signs, and decide where you will breathe. • If you stopped in the wrong place, go back a little: starting again is not a mistake, breaking the meaning is. • Thinking about the meaning helps you stop well: you cut where the idea ends.
Key points to remember • At a stop: sukun on the last letter; ـً becomes "aa"; ة is said with a light "h". • Verse endings () are the best stops. • مـ compulsory stop; لا no stop; ج either; صلى continuing is better; قلى stopping is better; ∴ … ∴ one or the other. • When starting again, the helping vowel is pronounced: "a" for ال (al-ḥamdu), "i" in اهْدِنَا (ihdinaa).
The main message Stopping and starting again well means respecting the meaning: we breathe where the Qur'an allows it, so that each sentence keeps what Allah meant.
