الوحدة: أُسُسُ التَّجْوِيدِ
The seven letters that are always heavy, and three letters that change: ra, the lam of Allah's name, and alif.
After the point of articulation, the "right" of a letter is also its weight. Some letters have a full sound, others a light one.
Tafkhiim (تَفْخِيم): making the sound heavy, full. The back of the tongue rises towards the palate and the mouth fills with sound. Tarqiiq (تَرْقِيق): making the sound light. The tongue stays low. Careful: heaviness comes from the tongue, not the lips. Do not round your lips to "sound heavy", or you will hear an "o".
1. The seven letters that are always heavy: خ ص ض غ ط ق ظ We remember them with the phrase خُصَّ ضَغْطٍ قِظْ (khuṣṣa ḍaghṭin qiẓ). They are the letters of isti'laa' ("raising" of the tongue). They stay heavy whatever their vowel: a little more with a fatḥa, a little less with a kasra. The heaviest are ص ض ط ظ.
Test the pairs (one light, one heavy): سَيْف (sayf, sword) / صَيْف (ṣayf, summer) تِين (tiin, fig) / طِين (ṭiin, clay) كَلْب (kalb, dog) / قَلْب (qalb, heart) دَلَّ (dalla, he guided) / ضَلَّ (ḍalla, he went astray)
2. The letters that change weight • Ra (ر). As a general rule: heavy with a fatḥa or a ḍamma, رَبِّ (114:1), الرَّحْمَٰنِ (1:3); light with a kasra, رِجَالٌ. With a sukun, it mostly follows the vowel before it: light after a kasra (فِرْعَوْنَ), heavy after a fatḥa or a ḍamma (مَرْيَمَ, الْقُرْآنُ). There are special cases your teacher will show you. • The lam of Allah's name. Heavy after a fatḥa or a ḍamma: هُوَ اللَّهُ (112:1), عَبْدُ اللَّهِ. Light after a kasra: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ (1:1). All other lams are light. • Alif (ا) has no weight of its own: it follows the letter before it. Heavy in قَالَ, light in كَانَ and مَالِكِ.
Challenge: recite Al-Fatiha and write down each ر and each lam of Allah's name, with "H" (heavy) or "l" (light). Check with your teacher.
Understanding the lesson
Explanation Why are some letters heavy? For the seven letters of خُصَّ ضَغْطٍ قِظْ, the back of the tongue rises towards the palate (isti'laa'): the mouth fills up and the sound becomes full. For four of them, ص ض ط ظ, the tongue also spreads against the palate (iṭbaaq): they are the heaviest. The other letters keep the tongue low: they are light. Ra and the lam of Allah's name have no fixed weight: they take it from the vowel they carry or the one before them. Alif follows the letter before it. Weight is not a matter of style: mixing up تِين and طِين, or كَلْب and قَلْب, changes the word.
Lessons to draw from it • Work in pairs: س / ص, ت / ط, د / ض, ذ / ظ, ك / ق. Say each pair slowly, several times. • Do not let the heaviness "spill over" onto the next letter: in قَالَ, the ل stays light. • Take care of Al-Fatiha first: it is the surah you recite most, in every prayer. • The Qur'an is meant to be reflected upon (38:29): pronouncing well keeps the meaning.
Key points to remember • Always heavy: خُصَّ ضَغْطٍ قِظْ; the heaviest: ص ض ط ظ. • Ra: heavy with fatḥa or ḍamma, light with kasra; with sukun, it mostly follows the vowel before it. • Lam of Allah: heavy after fatḥa or ḍamma (هُوَ اللَّهُ), light after kasra (بِسْمِ اللَّهِ). • Alif follows the letter before it. Heaviness comes from the tongue, not the lips.
The main message The weight of the letters carries the meaning of the words: taking care of your pronunciation protects the meaning of the Qur'an.
