Unit: Knowing Allah
Servants of Allah, created from light.
Belief in the angels is the second pillar. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The angels were created from light, the jinn from smokeless fire, and Adam from what has been described to you" (Muslim 2996). They never disobey Allah and do what they are commanded (66:6).
The Qur'an and Sunnah name some of them with their duties: Jibril, who brings revelation; Mikail, entrusted with rain and provision; Israfil, who will blow the trumpet; the Angel of Death, who takes souls (32:11). There are also angels who record our deeds (82:10-12), angels who protect (13:11), the noble recorders on each shoulder (50:17-18), and the keepers of Paradise and Hell.
Lessons: we are never alone, and our deeds are written; we should respect the angels and avoid what offends them; we do not worship or call upon them, because they are Allah's honoured servants. The mainstream Sunni schools of creed (Athari, Ash'ari, Maturidi) agree on these foundations and differ on some points of method and detail, which this lesson signals without settling.
