Unit: Speech and the tongue
The same values on social media: check before sharing, do not humiliate, and review the course.
What you write, you say. A message, a comment, a story or a voice note is speech. Everything we have seen applies online.
The source. Allah says: "He does not utter a word without a watcher beside him, ready to record it" (meaning of verse 50:18). A screenshot lasts a long time… and with Allah, everything is recorded.
Check before sharing. "O you who believe! If a wrongdoer brings you news, verify it, lest you harm people out of ignorance" (meaning of verse 49:6). The Prophet ﷺ said that it is enough of a lie for a person to pass on everything he hears. (Muslim, introduction, no. 5) [À VÉRIFIER: reference]
A few simple rules: • Do not share a rumour or a humiliating video, even "as a joke". • Do not post someone's photo without their consent. • Do not answer an insult with an insult: block, report, and tell an adult if it continues. • If you have hurt someone, delete it and apologise. • Use your accounts for good: share a reminder, encourage a friend, congratulate someone.
Course review. You have seen seven qualities: 1. Honesty (9:119; Bukhari 6094, Muslim 2607) 2. Patience (2:153; Muslim 2999) 3. Gratitude (14:7; Abu Dawud 4811) 4. Kindness to parents (17:23-24; Bukhari 5971, Muslim 2548) 5. Neighbours (4:36; Bukhari 6014, Muslim 2624) 6. Gentleness (Abu Dawud 4941, Tirmidhi 1924) 7. Speech (Bukhari 6018, Muslim 47)
Pick one to work on this month. Write it somewhere you will see it every day.
Understanding the lesson
Explanation Online, three things make words even heavier. They stay: a screenshot does not disappear. They travel: a message can be seen by hundreds of people in a few minutes. And they are often written without seeing the other person's face, which makes it easier to be harsh.
The Qur'an describes a rumour spreading: "You passed it on with your tongues and said with your mouths what you had no knowledge of, thinking it trivial, while with Allah it was serious" (meaning of verse 24:15). That is exactly what happens with a quick "share". Allah also says: "Do not follow what you have no knowledge of: hearing, sight and heart, all of these will be questioned" (meaning of verse 17:36).
A post can keep working after you. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever starts a good practice receives the reward of those who follow it, and whoever starts a bad practice carries its weight and that of those who follow it (Muslim 1017). Think about what your shares set going.
Cover rather than expose: the Prophet ﷺ said that whoever covers a Muslim's faults, Allah will cover him in this world and the next (Muslim 2699).
Common pitfalls: sharing before checking; posting a humiliating video "because everyone has seen it already"; spending hours scrolling without noticing, when free time is a blessing (Bukhari 6412).
Lessons to draw • Wait before sharing: who said it? Is it checked? Is it useful? • Do not post about anyone what you would not want posted about you. • If you are harassed: block, report and tell an adult, without insulting back. • Use your accounts to start good things: a reminder, encouragement, good news. • Each month, choose one of the seven qualities of the course and live it online too.
Key points • What you write, you say; everything is recorded (50:18). • Check news before passing it on (49:6). • A good post can keep bringing good; a bad one, harm (Muslim 1017).
The main message Online as offline, you are the same person before Allah: make your phone serve your values, not the other way round.
