Unit: I read!
With everything we have learned, we read real words: we look at each sign, cut into pieces, then read in one go.
Well done, you now know almost all the signs of Arabic! It is time to read real words.
The three-step method 🪜 1. I look: at each letter and its sign (vowel, sukun, shadda, tanwin, long letter). 2. I cut: I make little pieces that often end with a resting letter or a long sound. 3. I read: first slowly, piece by piece, then all in one go.
At the mosque 🕌 مَسْجِد → mas + jid → masjid, the mosque صَلَاة → ṣa + laa → ṣalaa, prayer وُضُوء → wu + ḍuu' → wuḍuu', wudu إِمَام → i + maam → imaam, the imam قُرْآن → qur + 'aan → qur'aan, the Qur'an دُعَاء → du + 'aa' → du'aa', dua
At school 🏫 مَدْرَسَة → mad + ra + sa → madrasa, school مُعَلِّم → mu + 'al + lim → mu'allim, the teacher كِتَاب → ki + taab → kitaab, the book قَلَم → qa + lam → qalam, the pen
At home 🏠 عَائِلَة → 'aa + 'i + la → 'aa'ila, the family جَدَّة → jad + da → jadda, grandma حَلِيب → ḥa + liib → ḥaliib, milk 🥛 عَسَل → 'a + sal → 'asal, honey 🍯
Little everyday sentences السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ → as-sa-laa-mu 'a-lay-kum: peace be upon you الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ → al-ḥam-du lil-laah: praise be to Allah جَزَاكَ اللَّهُ خَيْرًا → ja-zaa-ka llaa-hu khay-ran: may Allah reward you with good
Little activity: the detective game 🔍. Take a word from the lesson, and tell your parent all the signs you can see in it: "In مُعَلِّم, there is a ḍamma, a fatḥa, a sukun… and a shadda!"
Understanding the lesson
Explanation Reading is like climbing stairs: one step at a time. If you try to read the whole word in one go at the start, you may make mistakes; if you cut it into pieces, you manage every time. The more you read, the more your eyes recognise words by themselves. One day, you will read "masjid" without even cutting it! The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever reads the Qur'an fluently will be with the noble angels, and whoever reads it stumbling, with difficulty, has two rewards (Bukhari 4937, Muslim 798). So every word read, even slowly, is precious.
Lessons to draw from it • I look, I cut, I read: always in that order. • I read a little every day, even five minutes. • I do not lose heart when I stumble: it is a double reward.
Key points to remember • The method: look, cut, read. • A piece often ends with a resting letter or a long sound. • masjid, ṣalaa, wuḍuu', imaam, qur'aan, du'aa'. • Reading fluently = with the angels; with difficulty = two rewards (Bukhari 4937, Muslim 798).
The main message Piece by piece, I read real Arabic words: a little every day, and my eyes get faster and faster.
