Unit: I read!
We slowly read phrases you know by heart: the Basmala, the start of the Fatiha, Al-Ikhlaaṣ, Al-Kawthar and Al-'Aṣr, finding each rule we have learned.
You have known these phrases by heart since "My first surahs". Today, you will read them with your eyes! For each one, we look for the rules we have learned.
1. The Basmala (1:1) بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ bis-mil-laa-hir-raḥ-maa-nir-ra-ḥiim "In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Very Merciful." 🔍 Sukun on س; the "a" of "al" fades away (bismi llaah); shadda in اللَّه; ر is a sun letter (ar-raḥmaan); tiny alif in الرَّحْمَٰن; long "ii" in الرَّحِيم.
2. The start of the Fatiha (1:2) الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ al-ḥam-du lil-laa-hi rab-bil-'aa-la-miin "Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds." 🔍 ح is a moon letter (al-ḥamdu); shadda in رَبِّ; ع is a moon letter; long "aa" and "ii".
3. Al-Ikhlaaṣ (112:1) قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ qul hu-wal-laa-hu a-ḥa-dun "Say: He is Allah, the One." 🔍 Sukun on ل; hamza on the alif in أَحَدٌ; tanwin "un" at the end.
4. Al-Kawthar (108:1) إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ in-naa a'-ṭay-naa-kal-kaw-thar "We have indeed given you Abundance (al-Kawthar)." 🔍 Hamza under the alif (إِ); shadda on ن; "ay" and "aw"; ك is a moon letter.
5. Al-'Aṣr (103:1) وَالْعَصْرِ wal-'aṣr "By Time!" 🔍 The "a" of "al" fades away after وَ; ع is a moon letter; we stop on ر.
A little secret: in the Qur'an (the mushaf), some words are written slightly differently, for example with a tiny alif instead of a big one. They are the same words; your teacher will show you. [À VÉRIFIER : graphie du mushaf utilisé au centre]
Then listen to Surah Al-Ikhlaaṣ in this lesson's recitation block, and follow the words with your finger.
Little activity: open your Qur'an at the first page with your parent. Put your finger under each word of the Basmala and read it slowly, all by yourself!
Understanding the lesson
Explanation Until now, you recited these phrases from memory. Today, you read them: it is a big step! You can now follow in your Qur'an what you recite, and soon learn new surahs by reading them yourself. Allah sent down the Qur'an in Arabic so that we understand it and reflect (12:2). Knowing how to read it opens the door to the most beautiful of books. To recite with all the rules (tajwid), we need a teacher who listens and corrects: the Prophet ﷺ himself went over the Qur'an with the angel Jibril every Ramadan (Bukhari 6). So read in front of your teacher, and do not be afraid of being corrected.
Lessons to draw from it • I read with my finger under the words, slowly. • I find the rules I have learned: sukun, shadda, tanwin, "al", hamza. • I read in front of my teacher so that they can correct me.
Key points to remember • Basmala (1:1), "Al-ḥamdu lillaahi rabbi l-'aalamiin" (1:2), "Qul huwa llaahu aḥad" (112:1). • "Innaa a'ṭaynaaka l-kawthar" (108:1), "Wal-'aṣr" (103:1). • The Qur'an came down in Arabic (12:2). • The Prophet ﷺ went over the Qur'an with Jibril (Bukhari 6).
The main message I can now read, with my eyes, the phrases of the Qur'an I know by heart: a door opens to the Book of Allah.
