Unit: Noon sakinah and tanwin
Before ب, the "n" turns into "m" (iqlab); before the fifteen other letters, it is half hidden with ghunnah (ikhfa).
Two rules remain.
1. Iqlab (إِقْلَاب, "changing"). Before a single letter, ب, the noon sakinah or tanwin changes into a light "m", with a ghunnah of about two counts. The lips close gently, without pressing. • مِنْ بَعْدِ: we say "mim-ba'di". • سَمِيعٌ بَصِيرٌ: we say "samii'um-baṣiir". In the mushaf, a small م is often written above the noon or in place of the tanwin: it is the sign of iqlab.
2. Ikhfa (إِخْفَاء, "hiding"). Before the fifteen remaining letters, the "n" is neither fully clear nor fully merged: it is "hidden". The tongue does not fully touch the palate, the sound goes through the nose (a ghunnah of about two counts), and the mouth is already getting ready for the next letter.
The fifteen ikhfa letters: ت ث ج د ذ ز س ش ص ض ط ظ ف ق ك.
Examples from well-known surahs: • مِن شَرِّ (113:2): noon sakinah then ش. • الْإِنسَانَ (103:2): noon sakinah then س, within one word. • أَنتُمْ: noon sakinah then ت. • مِن قَبْلِ: noon sakinah then ق. Before a heavy letter (ص ض ط ظ ق), the ghunnah has a fuller sound; before the others, a lighter one. Your teacher will let you hear it.
Summary of the four rules: • Izhar: 6 throat letters (ء ه ع ح غ خ): clear "n". • Idgham: 6 letters (ي ر م ل و ن): merged "n", with ghunnah except before ل ر. • Iqlab: 1 letter (ب): the "n" becomes "m". • Ikhfa: the 15 other letters: hidden "n" with ghunnah. 6 + 6 + 1 + 15 = 28: every letter is covered (alif, which never carries a vowel, cannot follow a noon sakinah).
Understanding the lesson: iqlab and ikhfa
1. Explanation Iqlab: the noon (tip of the tongue) and ب (the lips) are too far apart for idgham, but saying a clear "n" then closing the lips would be heavy. So the noon turns into a meem, which is pronounced with the lips like ب, and which keeps the ghunnah. Ikhfa: before the fifteen other letters, the distance is "medium": not far enough for izhar, not close enough for idgham. So we make an in-between state: the tongue does not firmly touch the palate, the sound goes through the nose, and the mouth already gets into position for the next letter. Common mistakes: • Iqlab: pressing the lips hard, or saying a clear "n" before the ب, or forgetting the ghunnah. • Ikhfa: pressing the tongue against the palate (which gives a clear nasal "n"), or on the contrary pulling the tongue back and producing an "ng" sound. • Ikhfa before ف: closing the lips and saying "m"; that is not an iqlab. • Keeping the same colour of ghunnah everywhere: it becomes heavier before ص ض ط ظ ق and stays light before the other letters.
2. Lessons to learn • Ikhfa is the most delicate rule of this unit: do not lose heart. The Prophet ﷺ said that the one who recites the Qur'an with ease will be with the noble scribe angels, and the one who recites it stumbling, with difficulty, will have two rewards. (Bukhari 4937, Muslim 798) [À VÉRIFIER : numéros] • Repeat the same phrase (مِن شَرِّ, مِنْ بَعْدِ) ten times in a row in front of a teacher, then alone. • Compare three words side by side: أَنْعَمْتَ (izhar), مِن مَّسَدٍ (idgham), مِن شَرِّ (ikhfa). The ear learns through contrast.
3. To remember • Iqlab: before ب, the noon becomes a meem, with ghunnah. • Ikhfa: before 15 letters, a hidden "n", with ghunnah, the mouth ready for the next letter. • The ghunnah lasts about two counts (to be demonstrated by the teacher).
4. The message of the lesson With these two rules, every letter is covered: the Qur'an was passed down with a precision that leaves no sound to chance, and learning it this way is a form of faithfulness.
