Unit: Reading marks and first words
Shadda doubles a letter; the article "al" is pronounced or not depending on the letter after it (sun and moon letters).
Shadda ( ّ ) looks like a small "w" above a letter. It shows that the letter is doubled: first without a vowel (as with sukun), then with its vowel.
Examples: رَبِّ rab-bi: Lord (Surah Al-Fatiha) إِنَّ in-na: indeed ثُمَّ thum-ma: then إِيَّاكَ iy-yaa-ka: You alone (Surah Al-Fatiha)
With ن and م, shadda comes with a nasal sound (ghunna) that lasts about two counts: listen to إِنَّ and ثُمَّ with your teacher.
The article ال ("al", "the"). It is placed at the start of nouns. Depending on the next letter, the lam is pronounced or not.
Moon letters: the lam is pronounced, with a sukun. أ ب ج ح خ ع غ ف ق ك م ه و ي Example: الْحَمْدُ al-ḥamdu (the praise).
Sun letters: the lam is silent; the next letter carries a shadda. ت ث د ذ ر ز س ش ص ض ط ظ ل ن Examples: الرَّحْمَٰنِ ar-raḥmaani; الدِّينِ ad-diini; الصِّرَاطَ aṣ-ṣiraaṭa.
Tip: if the letter after ال carries a shadda, the lam is silent.
Understanding the lesson
Explanation Shadda is a writing shortcut: instead of writing the same letter twice (once with sukun, once with a vowel), it is written once with this small mark. When reading, you must really "lean" on the letter: hold it a moment before releasing it. رَبِّ is said "rab-bi", not "rabi".
Why does the lam of the article disappear before some letters? Sun letters are pronounced with the tip or front of the tongue, at or near the same place as lam. Rather than making two almost identical movements, the lam merges into the next letter, which is then doubled. Before moon letters, pronounced elsewhere (lips, throat, back of the palate), the lam stays distinct. The names come from two words: الشَّمْس (ash-shams, the sun), where the lam disappears, and الْقَمَر (al-qamar, the moon), where it is heard.
Teachers often cite إِيَّاكَ (1:5) to show the importance of shadda: read without it, the word changes meaning. [À VÉRIFIER: example to be confirmed by the imam]
Common mistakes: not doubling the letter; pronouncing the lam before a sun letter ("al-raḥmaan"); forgetting the ghunna of نّ and مّ; doubling a letter that has no shadda.
Lessons to draw • Before reading a word with ال, look at the next letter: shadda = silent lam; sukun on the lam = lam pronounced. • Practise with words from the prayer (الرَّحْمَٰنِ, الْحَمْدُ, الدِّينِ): we read better what we hear often. • Correct a bad habit early: a mistake repeated for years is harder to undo. • Aim for quality: Allah asks us to recite the Qur'an slowly and distinctly (meaning of verse 73:4).
Key points • Shadda ( ّ ) = doubled letter: once closed, once with its vowel. • Sun letters: the lam of ال is silent and the next letter carries a shadda. • Moon letters: the lam is pronounced, with a sukun.
The main message A small mark can change a word: reading shadda correctly is staying faithful to the text of the Qur'an down to its details.
