Sacred Citation & SourceIbn Umar said that the Prophet ﷺ made zakat al-fitr obligatory on every Muslim, small or large, free or enslaved, male or female: a sa' of dates or barley (Bukhari 1503, Muslim 984). Ibn Abbas added that it purifies the fasting person from idle talk and obscene speech and feeds the poor (Abu Dawud 1609, Ibn Majah 1827, hasan). Scholars differ on whether it can be paid in cash or must be food, and on its amount; follow a trusted local scholar or your community fatwa. Verses 87:14-15 speak of success for those who purify themselves. Today, calculate zakat al-fitr for your household and set aside the amount.
