Sacred Citation & Source"Rise to pray at night, except for a little ... and recite the Qur'an in measured tones" (73:1-4). Tartil means reciting slowly and clearly, giving each letter its due, and reflecting as you read. Umm Salama described the Prophet's recitation as clear, verse by verse, with a pause at the end of each verse (Abu Dawud 4001, Tirmidhi 2927). Rushing to finish can empty the recitation of meaning. Today, recite your daily portion at half your usual speed, stop at one verse, read its translation, and ask: what does this verse ask from me today?
