الوحدة: فِي الْمَسْجِدِ وَفِي السَّفَرِ وَعِنْدَ النَّوْمِ
Asking Allah to open the doors of His mercy when entering, and of His generosity when leaving.
The mosque is the house of Allah. We enter it calmly, clean, and with a happy heart.
When entering, we say: اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ (allaahumma ftaḥ lii abwaaba raḥmatik) "O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy."
When leaving, we say: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ (allaahumma innii as'aluka min faḍlik) "O Allah, I ask You for Your generosity."
Source of both: Muslim 713.
Other good manners: • We often enter with the right foot and leave with the left foot: a habit that scholars passed on from the companions [À VÉRIFIER : référence]. • If there is time before the prayer, we pray two units (two rak'a) to greet the mosque. The Prophet ﷺ said: "When one of you enters the mosque, let him pray two rak'a before sitting down." (Bukhari 444, Muslim 714). Ask your parent or teacher to show you how. • We do not run, we do not shout, and we leave room for others.
The tip to remember it: think of a door. • When you come in, the door opens: "افْتَحْ" (open) the doors of Your mercy. • When you leave, you go back out into the world: you ask for Allah's generosity for your day (فَضْل). Entering = mercy (raḥma). Leaving = generosity (faḍl).
Understanding the lesson
Explanation Why two different duas? On the way in, we come to pray and get closer to Allah: we ask for His mercy (rahmah). On the way out, we go back to school, work or the shops: we ask for His generosity (fadl), meaning all the good we need in life. The Qur'an makes the same link: "Then, when the prayer is finished, spread through the land and seek the bounty (fadl) of Allah" (meaning of part of 62:10).
The mosque is the house of Allah, but it is also the house of the whole community. We stay calm there so as not to disturb those praying, we keep it clean, we put our shoes away, we smile at others. These small gestures are part of the respect we owe this place.
Lessons to draw from it • At the mosque, I am calm and I respect those who are praying. • I help keep the mosque clean and tidy. • I ask for Allah's mercy as I go in, and His generosity for my day as I go out.
Key points to remember • Going in: اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ; going out: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ (Muslim 713). • Going in = mercy (rahmah); going out = generosity (fadl).
The main message I enter Allah's house asking for His mercy, and I leave it asking for His generosity for my whole day.
