Placing your trust in Allah when going out, and greeting when coming home.
When you leave the house (for school, the park or the mosque), you can say:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ
In Latin letters: bismi llaah, tawakkaltu 'ala llaah, wa laa ḥawla wa laa quwwata illaa billaah.
The meaning: "In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might and no power except through Allah."
Source: Abu Dawud 5095, Tirmidhi 3426. According to this hadith, the one who says this is told: "You are guided, protected and kept safe."
"I place my trust in Allah" means: I am careful (I look before crossing, I stay close to the adults), and I know that Allah protects me.
When you come back home: • Say بِسْمِ اللَّهِ as you come in. The Prophet ﷺ said that if someone mentions Allah when entering his home and when eating, the devil says to his companions: "No place to sleep here tonight, and no dinner!" (Muslim 2018). • Say السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ to your family. Allah says: "When you enter houses, greet one another" (meaning of part of verse 24:61).
The tip to remember it: three "keys" for going out. 1. بِسْمِ اللَّهِ: I start with Allah. 2. تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ: I count on Allah. 3. لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ: my strength comes from Allah. Count the three keys on your fingers while you put on your shoes!
Understanding the lesson
Explanation "I put my trust in Allah" does not mean "I don't need to be careful". A man asked the Prophet ﷺ whether he should tie up his camel or leave it loose and rely on Allah. He answered: "Tie it, and put your trust in Allah." (Tirmidhi 2517 [À VÉRIFIER : numéro et degré]). It is the same for you: you look before crossing, you stay near the grown-ups, and you rely on Allah.
The phrase "la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah" is very precious: the Prophet ﷺ called it "one of the treasures of Paradise" (Bukhari 6384, Muslim 2704). It means: all my strength comes from Allah.
When you come home, the salam brings peace and love into the house. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Shall I tell you something that, if you do it, will make you love one another? Spread the salam among you." (Muslim 54)
Lessons to draw from it • I am careful and take my precautions, then I rely on Allah. • My strength comes from Allah: I ask Him for help when something is hard. • I say "as-salamu 'alaykum" when I come home, to bring peace and love into the house.
Key points to remember • Going out: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ (Abu Dawud 5095). • Coming home: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ and السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ.
The main message I go out with Allah and come home with peace: I am careful, and I rely on Him.
